7th Annual Wantsum Jazz Festival
The theme of this year’s festival is the past, present and future, all of which will be reflected in the music and the venue.
For the first time, we are holding the festival on the Victorian bandstand in Ramsgate’s Ellington Park. We have teamed up with the Friends of Ellington Park who are engaged in restoring the park to its former glory. Not only do we have a magnificent venue, but it is situated only a short walk from Ramsgate station which has links throughout Thanet and beyond. And if it rains, there are plenty of sheltering trees!
Musically, the past is represented in the ever-popular traditional dixieland style as played by Bert Butler and his Jazz Pilgrims. Their recent appearance at the Seaside Shuffle was hugely successful and they will be bringing yet another taste of New Orleans to Ramsgate.
Ivan Thompson’s All Stars have an established reputation both locally in Kent, but also in the wider world of jazz-related music and their line-up includes musicians who have established careers with a range of well-known bands. Their style is predominantly groove, funk and reggae.
Mixing the past and the present will be Syd Arthur. Their appearance at last year’s Monster Bass Festival both reminded oldies what the Canterbury Prog-Rock scene was like and introduced a new audience to a genre of music that they had subtly updated.
Our headline band is Bandsangu. This really is the music of the future. An 18-piece band recently formed by Paul Booth, whose career has reached stratospheric heights, it contains the cream of the London jazz scene. Heavily influenced by latin music, and particularly that of Brazil, they also introduce a funky feel to sounds that will knock you out.
The festival takes place on Saturday 3rd September and is free. Food and drink stalls will be available from midday and we are hoping the Ramsgate Model Railway will be offering rides on their circular track. The music starts at 2 pm and will finish at 9 pm. For more information, check out our facebook page: Wantsum Jazz but, whatever, come and enjoy an exciting family event.

The only information I have about Addington Street Fair is that it starts at 10.00am on Sunday the only reference I can find to it online is the Thanet Extra website http://www.kentonline.co.uk/thanet_extra/news/2011/august/31/your_guide_to_whats_on_in_tha.aspx where it says that it is on, on Saturday, this I think is a mistake.
This post came from reading the wrong info in the Thanet Extra website, I then Googled Ramsgate tourist information, which gives the result:
