Pinch and a punch it’s the first of the month

Here is the link to the site referral statistics for this blog http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/1011 as I have said before it is the nearest I can get to a popularity chart for the local blogs.

My own statistics say that this site has had 7,742 Visits, 4,153 Absolute Unique Visitors and 12,136 Pageviews in the last month. Bloggers own statistics, which is what the counter on the sidebar is linked to, are much more optimistic putting the Pageviews in the last month at 19,944.

Much of the traffic that comes here comes from other sites and I will be reviewing the links on this blog and removing some of the sites that don’t link back to this site.

Pinch and a Punch It’s the First of the Month; the state of Thanet blogs and local computing.

One again the referral statistics for this blog http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/811/ this the closest I can get to a popularity chart of the other local blogs.

The only one that would allow me to highlight the right bits of the web statistics to copy, being Internet Explorer, so I had to use it although doing so reveals that I am well on the way to being mentally defective.

I also had top use Chrome to paste the results into as otherwise the formatting would have been all over the place, need I go on.

One interesting problem now for me and many others in Thanet is that you cant install the latest version of internet explorer on computers running Windows XP, which means that you either have to run the risk of using a an out of date browser or increase your IQ.

I may ramble on.

Pinch and a Punch It’s the First of the Month

Lies dammed lies and statistics this month, here is the link to my site referral statistics http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/711/index.htm as you see Simon Thanet Life Westagte comes out on top with a whopping 354 visitors coming from his site directly to mine.

On the other hand here is the link to bloggers own statistics http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/711/id4.htm as you can see Tony Bignews Margate comes out on top with slightly less whopping 209 visits coming from his site directly to mine.

The wosisname thing that counts the last 30 days visits to this site and is appearing on more and more blogs instead of a conventional counter is directly linked to a blogger statistics page, here is the link to it http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/711/id2.htm

The all time history figure relates to when blogger first started their statistics facility a year ago and is vaguely interesting as it says that just over 200,000 visits have been made to this blog in the last year.

This months Absolute Unique Visitors figure is 5,214, which is as near as I can get to the number of different people who read this blog in a month. So thanks to all of you.

The picture above is Westgate yesterday.

Pinch and a Punch It’s the First of the Month, My Thanet Blog Chart

Once again the statistics that give the best indicator I can find of the relative popularity of the different Thanet blogs, this works on the principle that the most popular Thanet blogs have a link on them that take you to this blog.

My statistics show how many people have come here from other blogs, here is the link to these statistics for last month http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/laptop611/

The statistics also give me some idea about which posts readers found most interesting, obviously most blog readers just go to the blog address and I can’t tell which posts they read, but some go to individual posts, a combination of this and of course how many comments there are on a post give some sort of indicator of a post’s popularity. So below are last months top post statistics.

I have taken away the counter from the bottom of the sidebar and replaced it with a new one that shows the number of page views during the last 30 days, this is linked to blogger statistics and automatically updates. They are appearing on many of the more popular blogs I think the first of the local blogs to add one was Thanet Life.

Pinch and a Punch It’s the First of the Month Thanet Blog Popularity Chart

Once again the statistics for this blog, first where my visitors came from (details of the numbers of people who clicked on a link on another website to arrive here) which gives some indication of the popularity of those other websites.

Here is the link http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/shop511/
The pictures are screenshots from two different sources of statistical information about this blog and will expand into something large enough to read if you click on them.

There is a marked move away from Internet Explorer as the main web browser it is still being used by about half of us, but the latest version i.e. the most secure one won’t work on Windows XP which most of us are still using.
I think the Google Analytics figure is more modest than the Blogger statistics figure because the code it uses is only in the front page of the blog, so that it it doesn’t pick up readers who click on a link to a particular post.
Thanks to all of my readers during the last month, however many there were.

To end on a note of embarrassment the counter on this blog has now passed the 200,000 mark the only problem is that I can’t remember when I put it on.

You will have to rely on Bloggers Pageviews all Time History which started in July 2010 and tell you there have been 165,574 visits since then.

PS. On mobile blogging, there has been a marked increase in people assessing the Thanet Blogs by Iphone, this is a mobile phone that allows you to access the internet from almost anywhere. This facility has now become so cheap, I pay an extra £20 for six months unlimited internet access on my pay as you go phone. Making it the cheapest internet access I know of.

Much of this access is now happening via http://thanetblogs.blogspot.com/ which allows one to read the comment and posts on the main Thanet Blogs from one internet page. This is much quicker on a mobile connection than opening each blog one at at a time.

Pinch and a Punch, an April Fools Blogger

Having children on April Fools Day means that one has already been destruction tested before most people have woken up.

Looking at the blogs and other news sources covering Thanet it is a bit difficult to tell if any of the posts and stories are April Fools.

This one From Thanet Newswire has some potential http://thanetnewswire.blogspot.com/2011/04/seaside-town-spends-39000-on-council.html but seems to be backed by a story in the Daily Mail http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1371843/Seaside-town-spends-39-000-council-job--running-beach-trips-locals.html is the council really spending £39.000 on taking local people to the seaside?

There is a rather strange article about council employees sick leave in the Gazette, see http://www.thisiskent.co.uk/where/thanet/Council-sick-leave-rate-scandalous/article-3396142-detail/article.html the article says that TDC workers took an average of 12.9 days off in 2011. The bizarre is this:

“Thanet council's business services manager Sarah Carroll said there had been a "turnaround".

She added: "We've set challenging targets to cut sickness levels at the council and have worked hard over the past few years to reduce staff sickness, bringing it down from an average of 11 days for each member of staff in 2006/07 to just over 8 days now.” As the article says it has increase to 12.9 days and the council officer says it has reduced to 8 days, but then as anyone who has tried to communicate with the council will know, 10 council day are equal to a fortnight.

April fools day the councils website is always good for a laugh, here’s their list of forthcoming events:

“St. Laurence Churchyard Tour (April)
Day of Special Interest: The Mediaeval Art of Love and Life.
Margate Bazaar
The Other Whistler
Art Exhibition & Sale
St. Laurence Churchyard Tour (May)
History of Blue and White China Over Five Centuries.
St. Laurence Churchyard Tour (June)
The Spencers of Spencer House and Althorpe.
St. Laurence Churchyard Tour (July)”

And there was me thinking that a certain art gallery was opening soon.

Here are the web referral statistics for this blog http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/411/ and here are the ones for the press release blog http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/411/id2.htm you can take them as popularity score for the local blogs, if you like.

Pinch and a Punch it’s the First of the Month, popularity scores for the Thanet Blogs

A word of warning, if you thought the rest of this blog was a bit boring, this is the pits.
First the Google referral stats for this blog http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/311/ if this is all Geek to you, they show the people who arrived here by clicking on a link, on another website and may be an indicator of that site’s popularity.

Next the referral stats for my press release blog http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/311/id3.htm I have only put these up because they show my other blog in a very good light, it seems to have overtaken Eastcliff Richards.
This is all a bit like Adrian Mole and measuring ones thing, once it stops growing due to age one tends to measure other things, in this case statistics.

Next my act of audience piety, a screen shot of the visitor statistics for this blog during last month http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/311/id4.htm many thanks to the 4,186 individuals who read this blog during the last month.
Next a bit of a peculiar disparity, things as the say don’t quite add up, being a closet geek I use special statistics, this means I embed a wasisname in my websites and the lovely machine at google reads this and gives me all sorts of information about the site usage.

Here is the screenshot of the overall graph http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/311/id5.htm the less geeky have had access to this sort of information about their blogs since last July, when blogger added a statistic page to the bit where bloggers twiddle with their blogs and this gives a different set of figures and a different shaped chart see http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/311/id6.htm As you can see it’s a lot more optimistic and raises some questions like. What about the 128,752 visitors since July when the site meter that has been on the site since – oh well for ages – only registers 177,683. there is of course the possibility that loads of visitors have been sneaking in by some sort of backdoor and missing the site counter. Sadly though I suspect that my metaphorical thing is shorter than I thought.
There is a neck and neck race between Bignews Margate and Thanet Life, when I looked yesterday the flying doctor was in front but overnight the intrepid track layer has crept in front by four places, this battle between plane and train – what am I talking about here and was it only yesterday I metaphorically measured my thing?
I imagine most of the other blog writers will be far too self-confident to even look and see where that stand in this dubious scale.
Just one further thought and that is the time effort involved, with all of the different bits of web publishing and taking screen shots, these pinch and a punch, posts are some of the most time consuming ones that I do, this one took about an hour to put together.
An hour of my life, you see blogging is really for the insane, why do it? The answer is, I don’t really know.
Just thought if this web statistics thing interests you, I can’t unlock the password on my blogger statistics, probably because I am not geeky enough and can no longer unlock the http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/ as I have had had to switch its hosting to a Windows server, because of a problem with an Access based searchable online database, you didn’t really want to know that did you?

However I can completely unlock the statistics for another of my sites http://thanetonline.com/ so that all of the links work and you can see the amount of information available to webmasters http://www.thanetonline.com/stats/awstats.pl?month=02&year=2011&output=main&config=www.thanetonline.com
This is because of the wonder of linux that lets you fiddle with things that windows wouldn’t dream of.
Here for instance is the list of visiting ip addresses http://www.thanetonline.com/stats/awstats.pl?month=02&year=2011&config=www.thanetonline.com&output=allhosts this is the thing that identifies all of the visitors to the site, I am not a number, comes to mind.

Pinch and a Punch It’s the First of the Month

Once again Mr Borings monthly blog post, so unless you have a local blog I would give this one a miss.

Here is a list of the traffic to this blog from other local blogs and websites that comes here by clicking on a link on those websites.

Click on the link for it http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/2111/

Here are the top local blogs, with some notes.
Still at number 1 EASTCLIFF RICHARD http://eastcliffrichard.blogspot.com/ with 345 readers sent here from there Wikio, not rated.

Quite why this should be the case when he hasn’t posted anything since 21st September I don’t really know. Last seen on Facebook where he said. “Contrary to popular opinion, I am not dead. Merely resting.” On 12th October, and his final word even more recently on Twitter, where he said. “What chance of flogging a Fannit cliff top mansion in this economic climate? That said, my London pied-a-terre is up 30% in 5 years!” on 5th January.

Blog quick to open comment moderation set, test comment 11.14.
At number 2 BIGNEWS MARGATE http://bignewsmargate.blogspot.com/ with 195 readers sent here from there Wikio rating 919.

Tony being at number 2 seems reasonable as he posts regularly the content is controversial, interesting and he gets a fair amount of comment.

Blog is a bit slow to open due to advertising, irritating word recognition when you try to comment, and comment moderation set, belt and braces very difficult to comment on, test comment today 11.29.
At number 3 Thanet Life http://birchington.blogspot.com/ with 192 readers sent here from there Wikio rating 1630.

Good and informative local blog run by local councillor, always publishes my comments although some of them disagree with what he says and put him in a difficult position, well done that man.
Blog quick to open, irritating word recognition when you try to comment, and comment moderation set, belt and braces very difficult to comment on, test comment today 11.44.
At number 4 Eastcliff Matters http://eastclifframsgate.blogspot.com/ with 73 readers sent here from there Wikio not rated.

Good and informative local blog run by local councillor.

Quick to open no comment moderation or word verification, easy to comment on.
At number 5 Ramsgate Remembered http://my-ramsgate.blogspot.com/ with 70 Readers sent here from there Wikio not rated.

Quick to open, impossible to comment on.
This all links up with the same chap’s other local history site http://www.ramsgatehistory.com/ where you can comment so not really any black marks for not being able to comment on his blog.
Both sites are excellent for information about Ramsgate’s history, my only warning being is that if you go there you may not get much else done for a while.

At number 6 Promote Thanet http://promotethanet.blogspot.com/ with 49 readers sent here from there Wikio rating 4024.

Quick to open no comment moderation or word verification, easy to comment on.
This blog is an interesting mixture from a local disabled bloke, being the internet though you wouldn’t know, if he hadn’t said.
The latest innovation here is that Don has evidently acquired a camera that he can use despite his disability, so he is putting up some from the wheelchair shots that offer a different and interesting view.

At number 7 Thanet coast life http://thanetcoastlife.blogspot.com/ with 47 readers sent here from there Wikio rating 4385.
Quick to open no comment moderation or word recognition, test comment 1.42
This blog is an excellent resource for Margate history and local marine ecology, once again the only snag being, if you go there and start working back through the posts, you may not get much else done today.

I may do some more of this but it’s a bit time consuming.

Pinch drunk and punch happy New Year ramble.

For the inquisitive blogger here are last months web statistics http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/shop111/

In terms of read all about it, it would seem that the blog is dead, long live Twitterface, or is it? read our very own internet guru and intrepid aviator in pre velocipede mode Simon Moores http://birchington.blogspot.com/2010/12/here-and-now.html

In view of the sequence of events I can hardly parody Enid Blyton and say, “Biggles went out on his bicycle and felt a little queer.” I do think though that the problem runs deeper and get the feeling that it is intellectual property that is the root cause.

Next, to what Bignews is feeling a little queer about today, it would appear he has a sore point, is this to do with the bicycle? Apparently not but something to do with a little peer, http://bignewsmargate.blogspot.com/2010/12/honours-britain-feudal-system-alive-and.html

Staying with the Tonys for a moment the Beachcomber blog has a truly local article about Margate Museum, see http://thanetcoastlife.blogspot.com/2010/12/margate-museum-to-repen.html

One way or another I think Margate Museum will reopen, not though because of any will by the council to display and preserve our heritage, but much more due to the proximity of The Turner Contemporary.

Don don’t get on bicycles any more although this is to do with feeling queer, understandably what he is feeling queer about is the parking of those who don’t feel queer, see http://promotethanet.blogspot.com/2010/12/twitter-parking-in-family-bay-or.html

Here in the bookshop things haven’t been going quite so well, the vdeo may help you to understand the problem.

Where was I? Oh yes intellectual property, in this case the written word and a key question, why after feeling a little queer about something did we write it down and publish it? Bloggers that is, there really isn’t any financial gain in it and often just doing so causes problems with difficult comment.

The people who write for a living are certainly heading for difficulties because of the internet, although various strategies have come along to ensure that people get paid for what they write now, they just don’t seem to be working that well. Once something written has appeared as some sort of electronic file we can usually read it for nothing. For years it was mainly just the fact that it was printed on paper that ensured that the writer got paid, not because you couldn’t copy it and produce a pirated edition but because it was not really economic to do so and it was relatively easy to track down and prosecute you if you did so.

I will ramble on if I get a chance.

Pinch and a punch it’s the first of the month

Sorry to say I have totally messed up my web statistics this month, this was all down to the new blog design, normally I am resistant to change in these matters and tend to leave anything like the design of webpages well alone.

The problem was though that the old blog design was too narrow to fit in videos, something that have got wider recently.

Once I had selected a new design there was no way back, I even had to select colours, I have some notion in my head that orange goes with blue, so there you go.

Apart from the width, never mind the quality, and of course the change of colour everything else looked the same and it wasn’t until this weekend that I felt the need to inflate my ego and went and looked at the web statistics, only to discover that I had no visits during the last month.

Anyway after realising that I must have looked at my own blog at least a hundred times during the last month, I figured that there must be some other reason. It transpired that the code that the analytics site picks up hadn’t transferred to the newly designed blog with colouring all in the best possible taste.
Who says computers haven’t go minds of there own? Just take a look at the graph of this one waking up after getting its code put back in on Saturday, each dot represents a day. for what it’s worth here are the referral statistics since Saturday http://www.thanetonline.com/1110/id7.htm

Fortunately blogger started doing their own statistics back in July, so here is there graph for last month.

When it comes to referral blogger’s statistics are much less comprehensive as you see.
I have to admit that I am becoming a bit suspicious of all this traffic that comes from redundant sites like Bertie’s and Richard’s, statistics are very strange though.

There is certainly a lack of new local news coming up on the Thanet blogs at the moment and I suppose the problem there is one of, who pays the piper?

In this respect I am different to most of the other blogs, in as much as every time I post to a greater or lesser extent it promotes my bookshop, with that and being able to type fairly quickly it isn’t much of a chore.

I think that we are moving into a world where it is getting progressively difficult to see how anyone will get paid for writing anything, other than some amount derived from advertising.

Don’t worry I am not going to put averts all over this blog so that it takes ages to open, the vague promotion of the bookshop and local history publications is enough.

Anyway thanks to all my readers last month, thanks to all of those who provided me with information, from the anonymous envelopes through the letterbox to the council officers and councillors who popped in for a chat. Thanks also to those who have bothered to comment or linked to this site.

Pinch and a punch it’s the first of the month

Once again my referral statistics for last month showing the closest I can get to the relative popularity of the local blogs, see http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/flat1110/id3.htm

This isn’t supposed to be a post for my normal blog readers but is aimed at the other Thanet bloggers, so I don’t recommend reading it.

Looking at the statistics for the other blogs I write it would seem that this is now probably the most popular Thanet blog, in other words more traffic is coming from here than ECR to places like my press release blog.

Back in June Blogger started producing statistics so that people without the ability to set up statistics of their own could see how may people read their blog, this page shows a few snapshots from there http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/flat1110/index.htm

Needless to say these statistics are different to the ones I retrieve using a code embedded in the blog, in fact I think they may be a bit optimistic.

Pinch and a Punch it’s the First if the Month

My monthly review of the local blog popularity, click on the link for the statistics http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/910/id7.htm anyone having trouble understanding them can post a comment and I will do my best to explain whatever they don’t understand.

I have no intention being anything other than Mr Boring here so recommend that you don’t read on.

The statistics above are acquired by pasting a code into the homepage of the blog this works rather like the http://thanetblogs.blogspot.com/ site I wrote to pick up comments on other blogs and is independent of blogger.

Blogger have just started producing their own statistics, once again password protected so I have to copy them for anyone interested see http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/910/id8.htm

As you see the figures are different and I have no idea why, computers and the internet are like this.

According to Wikio this the 742nd most popular blog in the whole world you can go to http://www.wikio.co.uk/blogs/top and check out any blog you wish to, just paste the blog’s web adders into the search box e.g. http://thanetonline.blogspot.com/ I am afraid to say though that I just don’t believe this information.

Where the internet is concerned any ridiculously over blown compliment I view with the deepest suspicion and now spam, out of hand comments that just say things like, fantastic blog.

In the secondhand book world the number of charlatan, swindlers, scammers whatever you like to call them is defeating the world of online bookselling. Back in the halcyon days of 1998 when I first stared buying secondhand books online, the proportion of unsatisfactory transactions was in the order of 2% now it is a serious problem.

Pinch and a Punch it’s the first of the month and some thoughts on the Thanet blogs.

With the bookshop I learnt long ago to put aside how the shop is doing in terms of profit and loss, or more basically how busy it is, how many boos are sold and at what price, leaving these concerns to my annual review with my accountant.

There really is only one approach and that is to give each person who comes into the shop as much help as one can, regardless of whether they spend any money or not.

With the blog my reviews, essentially the question, is it worth bothering with? This is a monthly task, mainly because blogging takes up quite a bit of time. The answer pretty much always comes down as a yes, mainly because it fits in well with working in a shop.

The computer is in front of me and there are gaps in the day where blogging fits in very easily.

There is no doubt that when it comes to local news the Thanet blogging scene isn’t what it was, this is partly because the local councillors who used to blog regularly and about local issues just don’t anymore.

It’s a long time since any of them made much effort to tell us what is going on in local politics, let alone published something controversial.

Another loss to the blogging scene in Thanet Strife, and I do wonder if in today’s Thanet blogging scene, if there are things passing under the radar that shouldn’t be.

Here is the link to last months web stats for this blog that tells you how many people came here by clicking on a link on another website.

It is the nearest I can get to gauging the popularity of the various other local blogs http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/810/id12.htm and however you look at it, it certainly seems as though it is only Eastcliff Richard who is maintaining popularity.

These statistics are based mostly on the blogrolls on the side bars of most Thanet blogs, these are the links to other blogs that update automatically when someone puts up a new post.

Linking on the internet is traditionally an area of you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours. Obviously if you go to the effort of writing some sort of website you want people to read what you have written. With this website nearly half the people who come here come because they have clicked a link on another website and the most likely way of getting those websites to link to your site is to link to their site.

So many thanks to all of the people who have links to this site and my apologies if I have left any Thanet blogs off my blogroll, if you want inclusion please let me know.

Also thanks to the 3,490 people who visited this site last month.

Pinch and a punch it’s the first of the month.

As this is probably one of the most boring posts that I do each month, I have illustrated it with a picture of The Granville just after it was bombed in WW2, click on it and click on it to enlarge to full size.

What this is about is the relative popularity if the various local blogs that have links to this blog and the nearest I can get to a local blog popularity chart.

Click on the link to view the statistics http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/610/id3.htm

Many thanks to the 2,524 Absolute Unique Visitors who read this blog last month.

A few observations about last months statistics, for the first time ever the visitors who came here from other blogs and websites was less than the number from other sources, i.e. direct traffic and search engines combined.

To be honest I don’t really trust this or any other statistical information about the internet but it is the best I have available.

Here is what the overall statistics for this blog have to say have to say.

5,833 Visits
2,524 people visited this site
2,524 Absolute Unique Visitors
9,704 Page Views
1.66 Average Page Views

Pinch and a punch it’s the first of the month Thanet blog popularity chart.

Once again the web statistics for where visitors to this blog came from which is as near as I can get to a popularity chart for the other local blogs that have links to this one.

I suppose to most people this has to be about as boring a blog post as you can get, but personally I have a considerable interest in these sort of statistics and I believe that the other Thanet bloggers look at them http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/410b/id19.htm

As it is my day off today I am doing this from my mobile notebook so apologies for any typos.

The new thing of interest that that I spotted straight away is that this is the first month that Simon Moores Thanet Life blog has had a link comparable to the ones on the other main Thanet blogs.

As you see his blog seems to be marginally more popular the main Labour councillor’s blog Mark Nottingham’s From One End of Kent, I wonder if this is in any significant of political feeling at the moment.

It is interesting to see where my Thanet press blog comes in all this, it only gats about 1,500 visits a month from about 900 different people.
